A Life’s Tale

A Life’s Tale is the first team project I led from start to finish. It was also my first time in a production role within a team I founded. The game was made in a week during the Summer Game Jam hosted by The XPlace.

The game is inspired by What Remains of Edith Finch in that it goes through certain points in someone’s life with the character themselves narrating these points in time. With the scope of this project in mind, these narrative points are presented in expandable text boxes that appear when the player is close enough.

As the narrative designer on the project, I oversaw creation of these text boxes and wrote the text that appears within each of them. The narration is from the character’s point of view, as shown in the screenshot above and to the left.

As the idea evolved within the team, it changed from simply revisiting these points in the character’s past to instead be their “life flashing before their eyes” before their time on Earth comes to an end. This allowed us to end the game in a way that felt satisfying and impactful to the player.

One design choice that was specifically designed around was the character remaining gender neutral. This is something I wrote an article about on LinkedIn, but the general idea is that the character in a game like this being gender neutral makes the game relatable to a larger audience than if they were given a gender.

To date, the game has earned 686 views, making it my most viewed project on the platform.

One of many item memories I wrote for my work in A Life’s Tale. This description accompanies a college acceptance letter.
The final memory within the game, the player character’s wedding. The last line of this memory description hints at the coming end of the game.
